Welcome to the Psychopharmacology Research Unit (PPRU)
The PPRU is based within the department of Psychiatry at the Warneford Hospital University of Oxford, Department of Psychiatry. The research group is led by Professor Philip Cowen.
The overall research programme of the Centre is focused on investigation of the causes, treatment and prevention of mood disorders.
The PPRU is particularly interested in the neurotransmitter serotonin (also known as 5HT). Dysfunction of this transmitter system is implicated particularly in mood disorders, such as major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder (sometime called manic depression), and also in other psychiatric illnesses.
Our studies involve both patients and healthy participants. Methods currently encompassed include neuroendocrine measures, long term prevention studies, sleep recording, molecular genetics, brain imaging, and psychological testing.
