In the past year, a further seven sites were linked to bipolar illness. Increasingly, it is recognized that mood disorders are multigenic, with only a few families showing determinant genes. Recent studies concentrated on multigenomic linkage studies of genetically isolated pedigrees but future research may be better served by association studies and multicentre co-operation.
