Biography

I am an academic psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Student Mental Health, at Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario.  I have had a longstanding and productive clinical and research focus on understanding the development and early course of mental illness in young people – both high-risk children of mentally ill parents and university students who are in the peak period of risk for onset. I am currently the Vice President of Research for the International Society for Bipolar Disorders and a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College and Honorary Member of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford.  I work with colleagues and students at Queen’s and Oxford universities to develop an international collaborative network of student mental health research called U-Flourish. My clinical work is focused in University Student Mental Health and my research involves large multigenerational families in southeastern Ontario.  My research has been funded consistently >25 years from provincial, national and international peer-reviewed grants including from the CIHR, OMHF and NARSAD, and I have been the recipient of several competitive salary awards including a Canada Research Chair in Child Mood Disorders, Campus Alberta Research Chair in Early Onset Mood Disorders, Clinician Scientist Awards at Dalhousie University and earlier in my career CIHR and NARSAD junior and intermediate Investigator Awards.  I have mentored numerous clinical and research trainees and have >120 publications in scientific journals.  I am on the Editorial Board of several peer-reviewed scientific journals, including Bipolar Disorders, the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry and the International Journal for Bipolar Disorders.
