There is increasing public awareness and interest in the impact of the reproductive transitions such as the menstrual cycle and menopause on mental health in women. This talk will summarise what is known so far about reproductive transitions and severe mental illness. Drawing on clinical experience in the NHS Lothian Premenstrual Disorder Clinic, it will share recommendations on how to be a “hormone informed” researcher and psychiatrist, and inclusion of endocrine context in research design, even if not the parameter of interest. This talk will conclude with plans for a new study investigating brain bioenergetics and menopause in bipolar disorder.

Dr Katie Marwick is an academic psychiatrist specialising in reproductive psychiatry across the life course. Clinically, she works in a multidisciplinary premenstrual syndrome clinic and inpatient perinatal psychiatry. She is currently a Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, Wellcome Trust Early Career Award holder, and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist with NHS Lothian.
