In his new book, Professor Willem Kuyken, Ritblat Professor of Mindfulness and Psychological Science and Director of the University of Oxford Mindfulness Research Centre, aims to provide easy-to-use mindfulness resources that can be implemented into daily life. He said:
In my new book I argue that mindfulness draws on ancient wisdom and modern psychology to offer three keys to unlocking a life well lived: befriending our body and mind, living according to our values, and paying attention to life as it unfolds. These ideas are not theoretical. They are practical actionable ways to live a good life.
Many people can feel overstimulated and find it harder than ever to stay present in modern society. Professor Kuyken believes current mindfulness teachings are too removed from how we live, leading to many giving up the practice after only a short time. He added:
Mindfulness is often misunderstood, reduced to a stress-reduction technique or a productivity hack. But at its heart, it is a practice in presence. It invites us to return, again and again, to the present moment—to meet life as it is, with interest, kindness and courage. In this way, it teaches us how to live well, not by achieving more or doing more, but by being more—more present, more attuned to what really matters.
Based on two decades worth of research, Mindfulness for Life includes stories, questions for reflection, tips for overcoming hurdles, and compelling guided practices. The book will also be accompanied by a companion website which includes audio tracks to help readers better practice mindfulness.
Professor Kuyken’s book is out now, and is also available as an e-book and audiobook.
