A β-amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene mutation has been identified in some familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) cases. The significance of this finding for the understanding of Alzheimer's disease (AD) as a whole is discussed. The relationship between Alzheimer's disease and other cerebral amyloidopathies is also considered.
