Criminality aggression © purplemattfish (Creative Commons License)

Potential mechanisms connecting mental illness and violent and criminal behaviour are still poorly understood. Through studying this complex relationship, we aim to develop violence risk assessments tools, and help improve care and management of forensic patients. Our work includes research on the mental health of prisoners and the needs of older prisoners, and on personality factors associated with aggression, especially psychopathy. We also continue to make substantial contributions to research on the relationship between violent crime and both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and substance misuse. This work is funded by the Wellcome Trust.
