Emily Bowman
BSc(Hons), PhD
Postdoctoral Researcher and Data Science Theme Coordinator
Data Science and Precision Psychiatry
I am a Postdoctoral Researcher working with Professor Philip McGuire and Dr Graham Blackman, within the NIHR Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre, Data Science Theme.
My research focuses on harnessing data science to discover, develop, and validate biomarkers that provide information about the underlying pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. This approach aims to bridge the gap between clinical symptoms and their biological mechanisms, as well as improving our understanding of treatment response and outcomes. By developing and implementing research methods for precision psychiatry approaches, we hope to tailor treatment options and improve outcomes for patients.
I am a core member of the Baseline Biomarker Check (BBC) study team. The BBC study aims to implement a precision approach for patients experiencing a first episode of psychosis, with particular focus on early identification of secondary causes of psychosis, and poor response to treatment.
Alongside my work on the BBC study, I am involved in many parallel research projects within the Department of Psychiatry, such as the Stratification and Treatment in Early Psychosis (STEP) Programme, and PSYSCAN. My data science work involves exploration of fluid biomarkers, imaging, cognition, and psychiatric symptoms.
I am also the Research Coordinator for the Data Science Theme within the NIHR Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre.
Before arriving at Oxford, I completed my PhD and initial postdoctoral work at Queen's University Belfast, Centre for Public Health. My work there investigated heterogeneity and subphenotyping of delirium in ageing and critically ill populations. This involved large scale analyses of clinical and biomarker data from observational studies and clinical trials.
Prior to completing my PhD, I studied for an undergraduate degree in Human Biology (2020).
