Times of hormone fluctuation, such as the menstrual cycle, postpartum, and menopause transition, can have profound effects on mental health. However, these factors have historically been overlooked and continue to be a neglected area of research even today.
Why some women are particularly vulnerable to mental health problems at times of hormonal change could give us clues as to what causes mental disorders and may ultimately lead to better treatments.
My DPhil is focussed on how the menstrual cycle affects women with psychosis. I also have an honorary clinical role in the National Female Hormone Clinic, at the Maudsley Hospital, where I see patients with a range of mental health difficulties relating to hormonal changes.
