Abstract Based on a systematic review of 219 exposure trials on stone, this paper aims to learn from and build upon past experience to improve practice. Existing studies vary widely, but we identified common themes and challenges, such as supporting long-term designs and ensuring comparability. Proposed priorities for future research are ensuring legacy, enhancing adaptability to changing conditions, optimising methodological designs, improving overall sustainability, and scaling up to respond to real-world challenges.
