Evidence-based treatments for anxiety and depression in children and young people have typically recommended the involvement of families in treatment to some degree. In this chapter we present a model of family-related cognitive and behavioral pathways to the development and maintenance of anxiety and depression in children and young people. On the basis of this model we propose a set of key competencies for working with families, as used in empirically-supported treatments.
