People with chronic mental disorder, mental handicap or personality disorders may experience difficulties in forming intimate relationships and responding sexually. This review discusses the impact of major psychiatric disorders, mental handicap and substance abuse on sexual maturation and functioning. The significant social, psychological and biological factors are described.
