I work within the Department of Psychiatry and the Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre to promote patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) in research. My interest in PPIE developed out of a desire to improve and manage my mood disorder (Bipolar Disorder 1).
For over 20 years I have participated in clinical trials and studies ranging from a randomised control trial of different medication combinations to StemBANCC - a study to develop a resource of induced pluripotent stem cells for researchers to use in their search for drugs to treat and cure disease.
Since 2015 I have been advising on how to raise the profile of mental health research, influence research design and how to best involve patients and members of the community in research. From 2016 I was a member of the Patient and Research (PAR) group including being its first Patient co-chair. I was also the PPIEP lay member for the OHBRC Steering Committee. In addition to my work at the OH BRC, from 2018 - 2022 I sat on the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for Thames Valley and region and from 2017 - 2022 the SPCR Evidence Synthesis Working Group. In early 2020 I joined the Ethics Board for IM2PACT, an international research project, formed by a new consortium of 27 partners from academia, industry, small and medium size enterprises which “aims to tackle the unmet challenge of discovery and characterisation of blood-brain barrier targets and transport mechanisms for brain delivery of therapeutics to treat neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases”.
As lead author I contributed the chapter on PPIE in Research Methods in Mental Health: A comprehensive guide (2026). Since 2018 I have been a lay contributor to a number of research papers. Latterly my interests have led me to be involved with medical education. In this role I have co-delivered lectures on Mood Disorder and Humanities and Psychiatry workshop sessions. I now sit on the Psychiatry Undergraduate Teaching Committee and the Primary Care Undergraduate Teaching Committee.
