Tarek Zghoul

BSc, MBChB, MSc, PhD

Postdoctoral Academic Clinical Fellow

I'm an academic clinical fellow in psychiatry. My primary research interests are in affective disorders and in particular bipolar depression. I'm also interested in neuropsychiatric sequelae of traumatic brain injury. I did my PhD in circadian biology and alcohol addiction, investigating the effects of clock genes on alcohol drinking behaviour. Prior to this, I did my MSc in electrophysiology, studying the effects of LSD on the OFC in the context of OCD.

I'm currently working on an fMRI project, investigating the effect of a single dose of lamotrigine on brain function in healthy volunteers. The goal of the study is to help us further understand the effects of a glutamate modulatory compound on emotional processing function. This is to be seen in the context of bipolar depression with lamotrigine having shown ameliorative effects with regard to the depressive phase of bipolar affective disorder.
