Last year Dr Marieke Martens won the British Association of Psychopharmacology’s Hannah Steinberg award. This award is conferred to support the career of early career researchers who wish to further develop their scientific knowledge and/or methodological skills through a time-limited placement in an academic setting away from their home institution.

Following the award, Marieke attended the lab of Dr Maria Ironside at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research (LIBR) in Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States from 26 May to 6 June 2025. Maria’s work focuses on mechanistic studies of anxious depression which accounts for nearly 50% of all major depressive disorder cases worldwide and is associated with worse clinical outcomes. During Marieke's placement she and Maria forged collaborations for a better understanding of anxious depression.
