The latest edition of the Shorter Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry has just been published by Oxford University Press.

Front cover of book reading: Eighth Edition Shorter Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry. By Paul Harrison, Philip Cowen, Mina Fazel and Kamaldeep Bhui. Includes an artistic image of a head with a brain inside.

As with all previous versions, the eighth edition has been written by members of the Department of Psychiatry: Professor Paul Harrison, Professor Philip Cowen, Professor Mina Fazel and Professor Kam Bhui.

It is aimed primarily at psychiatrists in training, but is also read by GPs, medical students, and others.

One of the authors, Paul Harrison, said:

The book is intended to be a clear, concise, and evidence-based introduction to psychiatry, in keeping with the research ethos of the department, and reflecting our reputation as a leading centre for teaching."

The content has continually been refined over the years, with all chapters updated to incorporate new knowledge, perspectives, and treatments. The new edition also places a greater emphasis on psychiatry in broader settings such as  primary care and public health, and has a new chapter on public mental health and global mental health. The book focuses on practical, evidence-based guidance as well as providing succinct analyses of clinical and scientific foundations.
