Leading neuropsychiatrist Professor Jeremy Hall is set to join the University of Oxford as Professor of Translational Psychiatry.

Professor Jeremy Hall

Leading neuropsychiatrist Professor Jeremy Hall is set to join the University of Oxford as Professor of Translational Psychiatry.

Professor Hall is an academic psychiatrist who is currently Director of the Hodge Centre for Translational Neuroscience at Cardiff University.

His research uses integrated neuroscience to investigate the impact of genetic risk factors for mental illness on the brain. By understanding the basic mechanism of risk for conditions such as psychosis, bipolar disorder and autism Professor Hall’s work aims to improve both diagnosis and treatment in psychiatry.

Professor Hall will combine his own research in Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry, where he starts in May 2026, with Chairing the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration from September 2026. He said:

This is a time of great opportunity for translating basic science in psychiatry and neuroscience into patient benefit. Recent years have seen remarkable advances in areas such as psychiatric genetics and brain imaging. It is now imperative that we ensure that this progress makes a real difference for patients with serious mental health problems.

“Oxford provides the perfect environment to make this translation a reality, and it is a great pleasure to be joining such a vibrant and thriving scientific and medical community.”

Professor Belinda Lennox, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, said:

We are hugely excited to have Jeremy joining the team here in Oxford, where his considerable expertise, leadership and knowledge will only strengthen our world-class team of researchers, scientists and clinicians. We share Professor Hall’s commitment to translating advances in brain and mental health research into benefits for patients, and look forward to working together to accelerate this vital work.”

Professor Hall completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at Oxford University before studying preclinical Medicine in Edinburgh. He subsequently moved to the University of Cambridge to join the MB/PhD programme, where he conducted his PhD studies in neuroscience under the supervision of Professor Barry Everitt. He then undertook his psychiatry training in Edinburgh under the mentorship of Professor Eve Johnstone, taking up the Chair of Psychiatry in 2011. In 2013 he moved to Cardiff University where he served as Director of the Neuroscience and Mental Health Innovation Institute and the Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences until 2025. He was appointed as inaugural Hodge Professor of Psychiatry at Cardiff in 2022.

Professor Hall is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He conducts clinics across neuropsychiatry.
