The Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) just announced the winner of their Educator-Development-Group Educator-Innovator-Award 2014.

Exploring Psychiatry Through Images and Objects

Dr Charlotte Allan, University of Oxford

Summary

The use of images and objects at the Ashmolean has enabled psychiatrists and medical students to explore the broad spectrum of human affect, and to reflect on how their interpretation and explanation of emotion might affect their clinical practice. These sessions inspired and invigorated clinicians' daily work, encouraging them to be open-minded and curious about their patients’ presentations. This innovative programme demonstrates how use of artistic images and objects can nourish personal and professional development: they represent an under-utilised resource that could add much value to medical training.
