Modelling whole-brain dynamics

This chapter reviews the fundamental ideas and necessary ingredients underlying whole-brain modelling which can reveal causal brain mechanisms underlying neuroimaging data. Developing accurate whole-brain models requires accurate empirical measures of the relevant components giving rise to the complex large-scale brain dynamics. We discuss the relevant structural, functional and receptor-density data alongside local dynamics that are key elements in generating whole-brain models fitted to the functional neuroimaging data. The importance of whole-brain modelling in development of stimulation- and drug-based interventions in disease is outlined, and the potential for examining causal mechanisms underpinning brain state transitions.
