Welcome from the Head of Department
Welcome to our Department. We value the contributions and dedication of all our staff and are delighted to have you join us. I have worked here for more than 20 years and it has been my great privilege to lead this Department since 2011. You can expect a formal introduction from me at our next monthly Head of Department Briefing, where the whole Department gathers to hear the latest Department news and updates on key decisions.
We are a family-friendly Department, and we recognise the competing demands of work/life balance and are working hard to improve the support we provide. Department meetings are held during core hours (9.30am to 4pm) to ensure they are convenient for the majority of staff, including those with caring responsibilities. Throughout the year, we run a number of different events within the Department that range from science to social occasions and bring together the entire Department.
There are a number of committees and working groups where you can work with others to develop initiatives to improve our workplace for everyone, and we welcome your input in these. You will learn more about these later in this induction and I hope you will choose to get involved. I have sat on our Athena SWAN (gender equality) committee since it was formed in 2011 and find the process very rewarding.
This Induction Programme is designed to help you integrate within the Department and University structure, and includes details of key people and functions. We hope that it will make you aware of everything that Oxford has to offer you personally at Departmental, Divisional and University level.
I am proud of our vibrant and inclusive Department and wish you an enjoyable and productive experience while you are here.
With best wishes
