We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor of Mina Fazel as Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

She will lead the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry research group of 22 researchers, including four DPhil students, in the Department of Psychiatry. The team aims to better understand how to prevent mental health difficulties in children and how best to support children and their families both here in the UK and across the globe.

Her own research focuses on improving access to mental health interventions for children and adolescents, with major projects including the OxWell Student Survey. She also has a longstanding interest in the mental health of refugee children.

Professor Fazel said:

I am hugely looking forward to starting as Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. This is such an exciting time to be working in this area. There is so much we need to learn to improve our understanding of what works best for children and young people, especially for those who are struggling.

I hope in this new role to encourage more researchers who are keen to work in this area to come and join us so we can really make a difference for as many young people as possible.”

Professor Fazel, who also works as a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Oxford Children’s Hospital, joined the Psychiatry department in 2002 after training as a doctor in both Oxford and Cambridge.

Professor Belinda Lennox, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, said:

Professor Fazel is a world-leading researcher who combines a multi-disciplinary and collaborative approach with extensive clinical knowledge of child and adolescent mental health.

In her new role as Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Professor Fazel’s wide-ranging experience, skills and energy will help drive forward research to make a positive difference to the lives of children, young people and their families.”

Professor Fazel will be taking up her post in June. She replaces Emeritus Professor Alan Stein who has taken up a senior position at the Blavatnik School of Government.
